Lab-grown vs natural diamonds: the honest answer
Chemically identical, visually identical, financially very different. The $14k gap on a 2-carat F/VS1, and how to decide which side of it you''re on.
We sell both. We''ll set either. We''re not interested in talking anyone out of one or into the other — but we are interested in clients knowing exactly what they''re buying. The difference between a 2-carat F/VS1 lab and a 2-carat F/VS1 mined diamond, at our bench, in 2026, is roughly $14,000 in retail price. That gap is the entire conversation.
What''s the same
Chemical structure (carbon, sp3 hybridization, octahedral lattice). Refractive index (2.42). Mohs hardness (10). The visible sparkle in candlelight, in daylight, under jewelry-store halogen. A lab-grown VS1 and a mined VS1 cut to the same proportions are visually identical to the unaided eye and to a 10x loupe.
What''s different
Provenance, supply chain, and resale market. Lab-growns have crashed in wholesale price ~75% since 2020 as production capacity scaled; mined diamonds have held value with a modest premium for certified-origin stones. Resale on a lab today returns roughly 10-20% of retail; resale on a mined diamond returns 30-50%, more for larger or rarer stones.
The honest recommendation
If the diamond is for a piece you''ll wear forever and never resell, the rational choice is lab. You get more carat for the dollar; the optical experience is the same; the environmental footprint is meaningfully smaller.
If you anticipate eventual resale, estate planning, or family transfer — or if the symbolic weight of "rare and old" matters to the wearer — mined is the right call. Both are real diamonds. The conversation is honest. Pick the one that fits the use.
